Windows, Doors, and Wind Turbines: The Unlikely Casualties of the Steel Tariff War

Windows, doors, and wind turbines have become the unlikely casualties in the escalating US-EU steel tariff war. The United States’ decision to expand its punitive duties to cover “derivative” products has dragged a host of seemingly unrelated goods into the conflict, causing widespread disruption and uncertainty for European manufacturers.
The policy shift represents a major broadening of the trade dispute. Originally focused on raw steel, the tariffs now apply to a list of 407 product categories that contain steel. This sweeping list includes everything from massive industrial installations like wind turbines to common construction materials like window and door frames.
Industry leaders fear the list is about to get even longer. A new US consultation is expected to result in further additions, a prospect that has the European industrial sector on high alert. This “rolling” approach makes it impossible for businesses to know if their products will be next, creating a chilling effect on trade.
The administrative burden is also severe. Companies are now tasked with the complex job of calculating the exact value of steel in their products. The penalty for error is a draconian 200% tariff, a risk that is forcing some firms to over-declare their metal content and pay more than necessary just to be safe.
The inclusion of everyday items and critical green energy components like wind turbines shows just how far the conflict has strayed from its origins. It is no longer a niche dispute about metal production but a broad-based trade conflict with far-reaching consequences for the entire European economy.
