OpenAI Cuts Voice Feature from ChatGPT Mac Desktop App

ChatGPT users on Mac face an upcoming limitation. Voice conversation capabilities in the macOS desktop application will be discontinued starting January 15, 2026. OpenAI communicated this decision through update documentation, positioning it as necessary for creating more cohesive voice experiences.
The change is limited to the Mac desktop app only. Voice features continue functioning through the ChatGPT website, which works on any browser, as well as through mobile apps on iOS and Android platforms. Windows desktop users also keep their voice access. Mac is the only desktop platform losing this capability.
The reasoning for singling out Mac remains somewhat unclear from OpenAI’s statement. The focus on unified experiences suggests the Mac app’s technical foundation may not support future voice development directions. As voice becomes a more prominent interface for AI, standardization across platforms becomes essential.
Users depending on voice features will need to adjust their approaches. People using voice for accessibility reasons, individuals with hands-free workflows, or those who prefer speaking to typing will all face disruptions. Web or mobile alternatives provide options but may require changes to established routines.
Industry observers largely believe this removal is temporary. Given OpenAI’s significant commitment to voice technology across other products, permanently abandoning Mac users seems implausible. The company is likely restructuring its voice infrastructure with plans to deliver enhanced capabilities to Mac eventually.
