Rydell gained widespread acclaim for directing the 1981 classic, “On Golden Pond,” which starred Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The film was a critical success, receiving 10 Academy Award nominations. Both Henry Fonda and Hepburn took home Oscars for their performances, marking a career milestone for Henry Fonda, as it was his final film role and his only Oscar win. Though Rydell was nominated for Best Director, the award went to Warren Beatty for “Reds.” “On Golden Pond” also achieved commercial success, grossing over $119 million globally.
Throughout his illustrious career, Rydell collaborated with many of Hollywood’s top talents, including Steve McQueen, John Wayne, Bette Midler, James Caan, Robert Redford, and Mel Gibson.
