Vietnam and Panama to Enhance Economic and Trade Collaboration

Vietnam and Panama are poised to enhance their bilateral cooperation, focusing on economic and trade ties, as Panamanian President José Raúl Mulino visits Vietnam from October 5 to 8. This visit is anticipated to pave the way for new agreements and initiatives aimed at expanding collaboration across various sectors, including agriculture, telecommunications, infrastructure, and education.

Both nations have a history of diplomatic relations dating back to 1975 and have since engaged in numerous high-level exchanges and diplomatic consultations. The current dialogue seeks to capitalize on their strategic geographic positions to serve as conduits between Southeast Asian and Latin American markets. Panama’s crucial location along the Panama Canal offers significant opportunities for Vietnamese businesses aiming for broader access to Central American and Caribbean markets.

Economic cooperation remains a central focus, with bilateral trade reaching approximately $478.1 million in 2025, marking a 19.2% increase from the previous year. Vietnam’s exports to Panama include products such as footwear, electronics, textiles, vehicles, and seafood, while it imports timber, seafood, and raw materials from Panama.

The visit by President Mulino is expected to bolster existing mechanisms for political and economic cooperation between the two countries. Both nations are keen to explore new avenues for trade and investment, particularly in sectors like maritime transport, port logistics, banking, and tourism.

This strengthening of ties underscores both countries’ commitment to fostering a robust partnership, leveraging their respective strengths to facilitate greater economic growth and connectivity between the regions they represent.
