Vietnam and Switzerland Enhance Partnership with Free Trade Agreement and Innovation Focus

Vietnam and Switzerland have solidified their Comprehensive Partnership through new initiatives in trade, investment, and technology. This development follows the official visit of Swiss President Guy Parmelin to Vietnam, marking the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

During President Parmelin’s visit, both countries committed to enhancing economic cooperation and political dialogue. A notable outcome was the signing of a Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland. This agreement aims to improve market access, support business growth, and create new opportunities for trade and investment.

The strengthened partnership seeks to increase bilateral trade, which surpassed $1 billion in 2025, and promote Swiss investment in Vietnam. Key sectors identified for collaboration include green finance, digital technology, infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and high-quality workforce development.

In addition to economic ties, Vietnam and Switzerland plan to enhance joint research and technology transfer, particularly in biomedicine, renewable energy, agriculture, and the digital economy. These efforts will involve cooperation between government institutions, universities, and businesses to foster innovation and the application of research.

Educational partnerships are also a priority, with plans to expand exchanges involving experts, researchers, and students, leveraging Switzerland’s expertise in education and scientific research. Both countries reiterated their support for sustainable development and free trade, emphasizing multilateral cooperation and a rules-based international order.

The collaboration between Vietnam and Switzerland is expected to contribute to economic growth and stability, both regionally and globally, as they work together on various fronts to address mutual interests and challenges.
