Vietnam-France Space Collaboration Enhanced by VNREDSat-1 Technological Advancements

The VNREDSat-1 satellite program marks a significant milestone in the collaborative efforts between Vietnam and France in the realm of space technology. Initiated with the launch of Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite on May 7, 2013, the program has set the stage for future advancements in next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and enhanced domestic capabilities. Although initially designed for a five-year operational period, VNREDSat-1 continues to function in 2026, exemplifying its enduring utility and marking its 14th year in service.

Beyond merely operating satellites, the program has enabled Vietnam to cultivate in-depth expertise in space technology. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, acquiring skills in system design, satellite operations, and troubleshooting. This training empowered them to address technical challenges independently, advancing from reliance on transferred procedures to crafting their own solutions. An integrated remote-sensing system has also been developed, which efficiently manages imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution.

Since 2020, VNREDSat-1 has been instrumental in providing approximately 30,000 satellite images for purposes such as environmental and natural-resource management, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and defense and security activities. According to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the program has laid a crucial foundation in technical and human resources for upcoming satellite projects. However, he emphasized the need for further progress in technology self-reliance, particularly in satellite design, payloads, electronics, flight software, assembly, integration, testing, and ground systems.

Further enhancing these collaborative efforts, a new phase began during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025. During this visit, a declaration of intent on long-term cooperation in space technology and Earth observation was signed between the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Airbus Defence and Space, and the French National Centre for Space Studies. This partnership aims to explore a next-generation Earth observation system and technological avenues for a proposed VNREDSat-2 satellite.

Future collaborations are anticipated to focus more on Vietnamese involvement in mission planning, system design, subsystem development, software, testing, and data applications. Opportunities for Vietnam to strengthen its domestic expertise may arise in areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and specific sensors and payloads. The overarching goal is to transition from purchasing satellite systems to co-development and technological mastery, gradually enabling Vietnamese scientists and engineers to design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future satellite technology independently.
