Yahya Saree, the Houthi military spokesperson, stated that the assault specifically aimed at weapons storage and command centers located within the Sharurah military base. Reports from Saudi civil defense authorities indicated that a projectile struck close to the Yemeni border, resulting in injuries to two individuals and inflicting damage on a mosque and multiple buildings.
In response, Yemeni government forces have escalated their military actions against Houthi strongholds. The military confirmed conducting three airstrikes in the Taiz region, focusing on Houthi sites and armaments near the port city of Mocha on the Red Sea. These confrontations come on the heels of a sustained week-long offensive by the Houthi forces, which led to their capture of significant portions of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline and several strategically important islands. These territorial gains have bolstered the Houthi presence near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a crucial maritime passageway at the southern entrance of the Red Sea.
The Houthis have further declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Red Sea ports, heightening concerns about regional shipping lanes and energy supply chains. The significance of this waterway has grown for Saudi oil exports, especially amid ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia persists in its support for Yemen’s internationally recognized government, while the Houthis maintain their alliance with Iran.
