Vietnam has underscored its expanding influence in fostering cooperation between ASEAN and Russia following the ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Vietnam’s Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted the nation’s crucial role in ensuring the summit’s success by promoting ASEAN’s central position and supporting initiatives to deepen the strategic partnership with Russia.
During the summit, the Vietnamese delegation, led by Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, focused on themes of dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Vietnam put forward proposals to broaden collaboration in pivotal sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These discussions resulted in the adoption of new frameworks aimed at enhancing ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy being identified as a key aspect of the partnership.
In a significant move, Vietnam announced its intention to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, underscoring its dedication to promoting future regional cooperation. This initiative reflects Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening ties and fostering a new generation of diplomatic leaders in the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their discussions focused on expanding cooperation across various domains, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam believes that the outcomes of the summit will significantly enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contribute to regional stability, and open up new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across the Eurasian region. These developments mark a pivotal step in the ongoing collaboration between ASEAN and Russia, with Vietnam playing a central role in driving these efforts forward.
