In a significant diplomatic development, Thailand and France have decided to elevate their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. This agreement was reached during official discussions between Thailand’s Anutin Charnvirakul and French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris. The talks centered on enhancing cooperation across several critical sectors, including trade, investment, cybersecurity, defense, and advanced technology.
Both nations expressed their intention to intensify collaboration in various industries such as alternative energy, aerospace, aviation, smart power grids, and artificial intelligence infrastructure. France reiterated its support for concluding the Thailand-European Union free trade agreement within the year, a negotiation process that began in 2013, was paused in 2014, and resumed in 2023. Thai officials emphasized that the agreement holds the potential to unlock significant economic opportunities for both countries.
The commitment to bolster defense and cybersecurity cooperation was also highlighted in the discussions, with both countries agreeing to work together to combat cybercrime, online scams, and transnational digital threats. On regional issues, Thailand reaffirmed its dedication to addressing border matters with Cambodia through peaceful dialogue and adherence to international legal frameworks.
Ahead of the formal strategic partnership, both governments announced the implementation of the Joint Action Plan to Strengthen the Thai-French Partnership for the years 2026 to 2028. This plan is expected to lay the groundwork for deeper bilateral cooperation. During his visit, Anutin engaged with senior executives from leading French companies such as Airbus, Imerys, EssilorLuxottica, IN Groupe, and Thales Group, encouraging them to invest further in Thailand’s burgeoning high-tech and future industries.
The discussions were met with optimism from the French corporate sector, with companies expressing confidence in Thailand’s investment climate. Notably, Airbus confirmed its plans to expand its aviation and engineering operations in Thailand, signaling a strong commitment to fostering technological and industrial ties between the two nations.
