Thailand Advises Cambodia: Avoid Tech-Driven Publicity in Border Dispute

Efforts to mend relations between Thailand and Cambodia might face hurdles if border disputes continue to be spotlighted on international stages, as warned by Thailand. Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow cautioned that persistent accusations against Thailand in global forums threaten to disrupt the trust-building process between the two neighboring nations.

This warning comes in response to remarks made by Cambodia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Keo Chhea, during a UN Security Council session. The ambassador highlighted the humanitarian impacts resulting from previous border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia. According to Cambodia, these conflicts have led to significant civilian displacement, destruction of homes and infrastructure, and inflicted damage to the historic Preah Vihear Temple, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thailand countered by expressing that Cambodia’s assertions were one-sided and conflicted with the spirit of a joint agreement signed in late 2025. This agreement was intended to foster reconciliation and restore confidence between the countries. The Thai government emphasized the importance of adhering to this agreement to nurture positive bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Cambodian government spokesperson Pen Bona reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful dialogue, adherence to international law, and respect for existing ceasefire agreements as means to address border issues. This stance underscores Cambodia’s approach to resolving ongoing tensions through diplomatic channels.

The long-standing border disputes, particularly around the contested areas near the Preah Vihear Temple, have occasionally strained the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia. These tensions have been a recurring challenge in the bilateral ties of the two Southeast Asian countries, underscoring the need for continued diplomatic engagement and cooperation.
