Singapore, Thailand Boost Tech Collaboration Before ASEAN Leadership Roles

Singapore and Thailand are set to enhance their bilateral and regional partnerships as they gear up for consecutive ASEAN chairmanships, with Singapore taking the helm in 2027 followed by Thailand in 2028. This commitment was echoed during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held in Bangkok on September 2. It marked the first meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as the first bilateral retreat between the nations in over a decade. Both leaders highlighted the strength of their countries’ relationship and expressed intentions to establish a multi-year agenda to ensure continuity in their ASEAN leadership roles.

The discussions led to agreements to broaden cooperation across several key sectors. They are poised to collaborate more intensively in fields such as artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, energy resilience, food security, connectivity, and defense and security. Both countries also committed to tackling transnational crime together. In addition, they reaffirmed their dedication to a rules-based international order and emphasized the importance of further integrating the ASEAN region.

Energy collaboration was a focal point of the retreat, with both nations endorsing initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project is particularly significant as it facilitates Singapore’s importation of renewable hydropower from Laos via Thailand and Malaysia, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

In a move to bolster social sector development, the leaders observed the signing of a memorandum of understanding. This agreement is aimed at fostering the exchange of knowledge and research related to social welfare policies and enhancing cooperation between relevant institutions. Such initiatives underscore the broader scope of Singapore-Thailand collaboration beyond economic ties.

On the economic front, the relationship between the two countries remains robust. In 2025, bilateral trade reached approximately US$52.4 billion, reinforcing Singapore’s position as Thailand’s largest foreign direct investment source for three consecutive years. This economic engagement underscores the significant and enduring partnership between Singapore and Thailand as they look towards future collaboration.
