In a concerted move to enhance bilateral relations and regional stability, Vietnam and Malaysia are expanding their defense cooperation. This development follows a meeting in Hanoi where Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, General Phan Văn Giang, engaged in talks with Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador, Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. The discussions underscored the ambassador’s significant contributions to advancing the cooperative efforts between the two nations.
General Giang emphasized the noteworthy progress in defense relations between Vietnam and Malaysia. He highlighted several areas where collaboration has been successful, including regular military exchanges, policy dialogues, joint training initiatives, and coordinated efforts at both international and multilateral platforms. These collaborations are seen as essential components in fostering strong defense ties.
In a bid to further solidify these relations, Giang called for the continued execution of existing agreements and proposed an increase in high-level meetings and engagement through established defense cooperation mechanisms. He extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defense leaders and companies to take part in the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, scheduled to be held in Hanoi, signaling a welcoming gesture for deeper involvement.
Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to Vietnam’s defense ministry and military for their support throughout his tenure. He voiced optimism that the defense ties between the two countries would continue to grow, which he believes is vital for promoting peace and prosperity in the region. The ambassador’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Vietnam-Malaysia defense relations, with the hope for ongoing collaboration and mutual benefit.
