In a significant move to bolster intellectual property protection, Thailand is set to destroy over 2 million items implicated in intellectual property infringement cases. This effort marks an intensified crackdown on counterfeit products as the country seeks to enhance its reputation in safeguarding intellectual property rights. The destruction of these seized items represents a 36.45% increase from the 1.52 million items destroyed in 2025, with their total estimated value surging to THB2.14 billion compared to THB900.91 million last year.
The range of counterfeit goods slated for destruction is vast, encompassing clothing, watches, bags, electronic devices, vehicle parts, medicines, cosmetics, and food and beverages, among other consumer products. These items have been seized through rigorous enforcement operations targeting both online and offline markets. The disposal process is being conducted at environmentally managed facilities located in Samut Prakan and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, ensuring that the destruction is carried out in a manner that safeguards nearby communities from any potential harm.
Despite these efforts, Thailand remains on the Watch List in the 2026 Special 301 Report, which assesses global intellectual property protection and enforcement. This highlights the ongoing challenges the country faces in fully aligning with international standards. In response, Thai authorities are actively working on an intellectual property work plan in collaboration with the United States. This plan aims to strengthen enforcement, reduce the prevalence of counterfeit sales, safeguard consumers, and foster a more transparent business environment.
This initiative underscores Thailand’s commitment to tackling the issue of counterfeit goods, which pose significant risks not only to consumer safety but also to the integrity of legitimate businesses. By enhancing enforcement measures and fostering international cooperation, Thailand seeks to build a robust framework for intellectual property protection that supports innovation and economic growth.
