Vietnam, Laos Boost Tech Innovation in 2026 Trade and Infrastructure Partnerships

Vietnam and Laos are set to enhance their partnership across various sectors, including investment, trade, infrastructure, energy, and human resource development, following a review of their 2026 cooperation plan. During a mid-year meeting held in Da Nang, officials from the two nations evaluated the achievements made in the first eight months of the year and identified key priorities moving forward into the remainder of 2026.

The economic collaboration between Vietnam and Laos has continued to grow robustly. In the first seven months of the year, Vietnamese companies initiated 20 new investment projects in Laos, with a total value of $638.3 million. Laos maintains its position as Vietnam’s largest overseas investment destination, hosting approximately 300 projects backed by Vietnamese investment, amounting to over $7 billion. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached about $1.3 billion in the first half of 2026, reflecting the strengthening economic ties.

Progress is also being made in other critical areas such as energy, transport, construction, and infrastructure connectivity. Both nations are keen on advancing these sectors to further solidify their cooperation. In the realm of education and human resource development, Vietnam is making significant contributions by offering 1,300 scholarships to Lao students for the year 2026. Additionally, Vietnam has committed $43 million in aid to Laos as part of a broader assistance program spanning from 2026 to 2030.

In their discussions, Vietnam and Laos emphasized the importance of enhancing coordination on major projects. Both sides are committed to addressing investment challenges and bolstering economic connections within the wider Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia region. This reflects a mutual understanding that regional integration and cooperation are vital to achieving sustained development and prosperity.
