On September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing convened in Hà Nội, marking a significant step in fortifying bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. This meeting, which was President Min Aung Hlaing’s inaugural visit to Vietnam in his current role, served as a platform for reaffirming Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s pursuit of stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic advancement. The Vietnamese leader extended a warm welcome to his counterpart, emphasizing the importance of their countries’ collaboration.
President Min Aung Hlaing expressed admiration for Vietnam’s socio-economic milestones and its rising influence on regional and global stages. He voiced an eagerness to learn from Vietnam’s developmental journey and reiterated Myanmar’s dedication to preserving its longstanding friendship and extensive cooperation with Vietnam. Both leaders acknowledged recent advancements in bilateral relations and committed to enhancing high-level exchanges and fostering political trust. They underscored the need to resume key cooperation mechanisms, particularly in trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security collaboration is projected to become a cornerstone of this partnership. The two countries aim to bolster efforts against cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Additionally, plans are underway to expand military training programs, facilitate exchanges among young officers, and address non-traditional security challenges together. Economic relations were also a major point of discussion, with both parties exploring avenues to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese ventures in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
The dialogue included strategies for enhancing infrastructure and air connectivity, such as reinstating direct flights and developing joint tourism initiatives, which encompass spiritual and medical tourism. On the regional front, Vietnam committed to continuing its collaboration with ASEAN members to ensure dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar. Both leaders affirmed their support for resolving disputes peacefully and in accordance with international law.
In a gesture of continued diplomatic engagement, Prime Minister Hưng invited President Min Aung Hlaing to participate in the CLMV Summit and to chair the ACMECS Summit in Hà Nội slated for November 2026. In return, the Myanmar president extended an invitation to the Vietnamese prime minister to visit Myanmar at a mutually agreeable time, further solidifying the ties between the two nations.
