Thailand Highlights Technological Advancements in China’s Tank Supply to Cambodia

Thailand has raised concerns with China over the recent delivery of Chinese tanks to Cambodia, emphasizing that this development could jeopardize the delicate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. This concern was articulated by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as reported by Thailand’s foreign ministry. The timing and presentation of these military shipments are seen as potential complications for the already strained relations between the neighboring countries, which have struggled to maintain peace despite several ceasefire agreements.

The Thai authorities highlighted that Cambodia received 39 Chinese-manufactured T-59D battle tanks under an existing military cooperation deal. However, there is no indication that these tanks have been stationed near the contentious border areas. Relations between Thailand and Cambodia have been tense since last year’s deadly clashes over disputed land and maritime boundaries, disputes that have roots in colonial-era treaties and mapping.

China has consistently stated that its defense collaborations with both Thailand and Cambodia are routine and not aimed at any third party. Earlier this year, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette. Despite the tensions, Thai officials expressed their appreciation for China’s neutral position and its efforts to mediate, stressing that the core issues must be addressed through direct dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia.

In a bid to foster communication and address mutual concerns, Thailand and China have agreed to establish a new dialogue mechanism involving their foreign and defense ministers. The inaugural talks are expected to prioritize joint efforts to combat cross-border scam operations. This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation and ensuring that regional stability is maintained.
