Vietnam Calls for Stronger ASEAN Cooperation on Extradition and Crime Prevention

Vietnam is urging stronger regional cooperation among ASEAN countries to tackle transnational crime and locate criminal fugitives more effectively. During a meeting with ASEAN delegation leaders and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat in Hà Nội, Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng emphasized the need for enhanced bilateral extradition and prisoner-transfer agreements. He also called for the swift ratification of the ASEAN Treaty on Extradition to streamline efforts in combating crime across borders.

Prime Minister Hưng highlighted the importance of establishing robust mechanisms to verify information, locate, arrest, and transfer fugitives between member states. He advocated for increased use of INTERPOL and ASEANAPOL databases, combined with direct information-sharing channels, to bolster investigations and prevent emerging forms of transnational crime.

To further strengthen these initiatives, Hưng proposed more exchanges between law enforcement agencies and the development of specialized training programs. He also stressed the importance of closer cooperation in technology and digital transformation, which would enhance the region’s ability to prevent and investigate cross-border crime.

The conference concluded with the adoption of an ASEAN Joint Action Plan and a Joint Declaration aimed at reinforcing regional cooperation against criminal fugitives. This commitment underscores ASEAN’s dedication to addressing the challenges posed by transnational crime through collective efforts and mutual support among its member countries.
