In a significant stride for Vietnam’s space ambitions, the VNREDSat-1 program has established a crucial partnership foundation with France, focusing on advancing space technology. Since its launch on May 7, 2013, and subsequent handover in September of the same year, VNREDSat-1 has surpassed expectations by remaining operational into 2026, extending well beyond its anticipated five-year lifespan. The program has not only bolstered Vietnam’s satellite operation capabilities but also laid the groundwork for future collaboration on next-generation satellites, technology transfer, and local capacity enhancement.
The program’s impact extends beyond the satellite’s longevity. Between 2011 and 2013, Vietnamese engineers underwent rigorous training in both France and Vietnam, acquiring valuable skills in system design, satellite operations, and problem-solving. This training empowered them to tackle technical challenges independently, marking a shift from merely following imported procedures to crafting their own solutions. Moreover, Vietnam developed a comprehensive remote-sensing system encompassing imaging requests, satellite control, data reception, processing, storage, and distribution. By 2020, VNREDSat-1 had generated nearly 30,000 satellite images, serving critical areas such as environmental management, natural resource oversight, disaster monitoring, scientific research, socio-economic development, and national defense.
The program’s success has been pivotal for Vietnam’s future satellite ventures, according to Trần Hồng Thái, President of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. While acknowledging the technical and human-resource groundwork laid by VNREDSat-1, he emphasized the need for greater technological self-reliance in satellite design, payload development, electronics, flight software, and ground systems. This drive for self-reliance took a substantial step forward during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam in May 2025, during which a declaration of intent for long-term cooperation was signed with Airbus Defence and Space and the French National Centre for Space Studies.
As this new phase of cooperation unfolds, efforts are expected to focus on enhancing Vietnam’s role in mission planning, system design, and subsystem development. The collaboration aims to explore a next-generation Earth observation system and evaluate technological options for the proposed VNREDSat-2. Key areas such as control software, remote-sensing image processing, artificial intelligence, ground systems, and specific sensors and payloads are likely to offer Vietnam opportunities to cultivate and strengthen its domestic expertise.
Ultimately, the broader goal is to transition from the mere acquisition of satellite systems to co-development and mastery of the technology. This shift would enable Vietnamese scientists and engineers to progressively design, operate, troubleshoot, and eventually develop future satellite generations independently, marking a significant evolution in Vietnam’s space capabilities.
