The European Union has mandated that Google enhance accessibility to its Android platform and search services in a move aimed at fostering competition within the digital market. These directives form part of the broader Digital Markets Act, designed to limit the dominance of major tech companies and expand consumer options in digital services.
According to the new regulations, Google is required to offer 11 features of its Android system to competing artificial intelligence developers. This will allow rival AI assistants to utilize essential device functions and respond to voice commands, akin to Google’s Gemini assistant. These updates are slated to be included in an Android update anticipated for release in July 2027.
Additionally, the rules compel Google to share certain anonymized search data with AI companies as well as other competing search service providers. This data-sharing initiative is intended to help these companies enhance their own search-based products. However, before sharing the data, Google is permitted to ensure that the requesting companies adhere to cybersecurity and data protection standards. This particular requirement is set to take effect starting January of the upcoming year.
The European Commission has emphasized that these measures are designed with safeguards to protect user privacy and device security, while simultaneously stimulating more robust competition in the fields of AI and online search. Despite these assurances, Google has expressed criticism of the decision, expressing concerns that such changes could potentially compromise user privacy and security protections, notwithstanding the company’s efforts to address regulatory issues.
