Thailand, Vietnam Boost Tech Collaboration in Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

Thailand and Vietnam have elevated their diplomatic ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, commemorating 50 years of bilateral relations. This development signifies a pivotal advancement in their political, economic, and technological collaboration. The milestone was reached during an official visit by Vietnamese President and Communist Party General Secretary Tô Lâm to Thailand, where both nations inked four pivotal agreements. These agreements span economic cooperation, science and technology, education, and aviation development.

In addition to these agreements, the two countries have rolled out a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan for 2026–2031. This plan is designed to broaden cooperation across various sectors. Thailand and Vietnam have pledged to intensify their joint efforts in security and defense, as well as in combating transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal fishing. The leaders underscored the necessity of tighter economic coordination to navigate global economic challenges and to foster private-sector growth.

A notable goal set by both nations is to boost their bilateral trade, which currently stands at approximately $22.1 billion, aiming for a near-future target of $24 billion. In the realm of technology and innovation, the countries have identified satellite technology, semiconductors, agricultural biotechnology, and other emerging industries as key areas for deeper cooperation. They also agreed on enhancing supply-chain integration, local economic connectivity, and collaboration in green energy to bolster regional competitiveness and energy security.

Throughout the discussions, President Tô Lâm reiterated Vietnam’s dedication to fortifying its relationship with Thailand, emphasizing the importance of working collaboratively to advance peace, stability, and sustainable development within Southeast Asia. This renewed commitment highlights the strategic importance both countries place on their partnership as they navigate the complexities of a rapidly evolving global landscape.
