China’s Advanced Solar Tech Dominates 99.3% of Thailand’s Imports

Thailand is poised to make significant strides in renewable energy, with a solar panel import surge indicating a robust effort to drive down household electricity costs and bolster a domestic clean-energy supply chain. The nation imported solar panels worth $426.7 million in the first seven months of 2026, marking an 88.7% increase compared to the previous year, as per data from Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce and Customs Department. This surge is predominantly fueled by imports from China, which account for 99.3% of the total.

Chinese imports rose to $423.9 million, reflecting a 107.1% year-on-year growth. While China dominates this sector, Singapore and Hong Kong contribute minimally, each responsible for approximately 0.3% of the total import value. This influx aligns with Thailand’s ambitious plan to initiate a household solar installation program, providing subsidies of about THB50,000 per household. The initial rollout targets one million homes, with potential expansion to 1.5 million.

In tandem with boosting solar panel imports, the Thai government is exploring ways to enhance domestic solar panel manufacturing. Collaborations with the Ministry of Labour are underway to train workers in assembly, installation, and maintenance of solar technology. Furthermore, discussions with the Board of Investment focus on reducing duties for production inputs not available domestically, aiming to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities.

The strategic push towards solar energy is expected to encourage both rooftop and ground-mounted installations, significantly reducing electricity expenses for households. This initiative not only promises economic relief but also supports the development of a sustainable clean-energy infrastructure within Thailand.
