Vietnam is asserting its increasing influence in enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, as evidenced by its contributions to the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized Vietnam’s pivotal role in the summit, which successfully promoted ASEAN’s central position and supported efforts to deepen the strategic partnership between the bloc and Russia.
Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation, which underscored the importance of dialogue, cooperation, peaceful dispute resolution, and adherence to international law. Vietnam proposed expanding collaboration across several critical sectors, including energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These proposals aligned with the summit’s adoption of new frameworks designed to enhance ASEAN–Russia cooperation up to 2030, with energy emerging as a key component of the partnership.
Further illustrating its commitment to regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This move underscores Vietnam’s dedication to fostering future collaboration within the region.
In addition to the summit activities, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their talks focused on expanding cooperation in crucial areas such as energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam believes that the outcomes of the summit will significantly enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contribute to regional stability, and open new avenues for economic growth and cooperation across Eurasia. This strengthened partnership is anticipated to create numerous opportunities for development in the coming years.
