Thailand has completed an essential step in enhancing its border security with Cambodia by finishing the initial 1.3-kilometre segment of a permanent border fence. This development comes in the wake of last year’s border clashes between the two nations. The new structure, located in Chanthaburi province, features reinforced concrete panels topped with steel mesh and concertina wire, designed to offer long-term protection. Thai military officials have confirmed that the fence has been rigorously tested, proving resistant to small-arms fire.
Plans are underway to extend this security measure by constructing over seven additional kilometres of fencing to link up with the newly completed section. Authorities are also evaluating other potential sites along the extensive 817-kilometre border shared with Cambodia. These future construction efforts will take into account the varying terrain and environmental conditions, ensuring that each section of the fence is both practical and sustainable.
This fortified border comes after a turbulent period marked by territorial disputes that escalated into two instances of armed conflict last year. These clashes involved heavy artillery and air strikes, leading to significant casualties and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. The hostilities were eventually quelled through separate ceasefire agreements.
By reinforcing the border, Thai officials aim to prevent a recurrence of such conflicts, prioritizing long-term security and stability in the region.
