Vietnam’s global engagement efforts have seen a significant boost following General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Tô Lâm’s recent visit to the United States and Canada. This five-day trip, which took place from September 20 to 25, aimed to strengthen Vietnam’s international standing and foster deeper cooperation with these North American nations.
During his visit, Tô Lâm participated in the 81st United Nations General Assembly session, marking his debut at the UN in his current leadership role. In his address, he emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation and the UN’s role in tackling global challenges, aligning with Vietnam’s development priorities and foreign policy direction.
In addition to his UN appearance, Tô Lâm engaged with key figures including senior officials, lawmakers, business leaders, and Vietnamese communities in both the US and Canada. Discussions with US counterparts focused on enhancing bilateral relations, with particular attention to trade and investment opportunities.
One of the visit’s highlights was the agreement between Vietnam and Canada to elevate their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership. This partnership is underpinned by an action plan that outlines cooperation in several sectors.
Beyond high-level meetings, Vietnamese officials and businesses conducted separate engagements with partners in both countries. These interactions resulted in agreements spanning trade, investment, technology, education, energy, and transport sectors.
Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized the importance of implementing the commitments made during the trip. He pointed to potential areas for expanded collaboration, including science and technology, trade, investment, defense, and security. Notably, he highlighted nuclear energy cooperation as a promising area for future partnership.
